To promote the development and extension of Conservation Agriculture and strengthen the international exchange in the field of Conservation Agriculture, the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) and United Nations Asian and Pacific Center for Agricultural Engineering and Machinery (UNAPCAEM) agreed to hold the “International Seminar on Enhancing Extension of Conservation Agriculture Techniques in Asia and the Pacific” in October, 2007.

I.     Background and Objectives
Conservation Agriculture has been adopted in over 70 countries world wide.  Many studies on Conservation Agriculture in China have demonstrated that it can improve water use efficiency, reduce production cost, increase crop yield, reduce risk and increase farmer’s income.  Conservation Agriculture retains crop residue on the soil surface to minimize water and wind induced soil erosion.  Consequently, sand storms are reduced.  It also increases soil organic matter by sequestering atmospheric CO2 to reduce greenhouse gas effects.  The nationwide Conservation Agriculture demonstration program initiated by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture was commenced in 2002, and currently 167 counties in 15 provinces in Northern China are part of this program.

The “International Seminar on Enhancing Extension of Conservation Agriculture Techniques in Asia and the Pacific” was initiated by the Agricultural Mechanization Management Department of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and the United Nations Asian and Pacific Center for Agricultural Engineering and Machinery (UNAPCAEM), to strengthen the cooperation between the two organizations in the field of Conservation Agriculture, to promote its development and extension in China, and to establish a Conservation Agriculture network to increase communication and collaboration among experts from China, the Asia Pacific region and other countries.   This seminar invites Conservation Agriculture experts from China, Asia and the Pacific, and other countries to discuss the strategies of Conservation Agriculture development and extension in China.
