Traditional tillage is to change the soil natural status completely, creating an ideal environment for plants. This change brings many advantages, in the meantime, it also brings lots of drawbacks.

First, this change destorys all the residue which could protect the soil and prevent the soil from wind erosion and water erosion; Secondly, rotating tiller kill many earthworms, etc and break the soil structure, and because of these, soil may lose dynamic. When tillage frequency and intensity getting bigger, the soil further from its original status, and the cost to maintain this status needs more.

In recent decades, the crop yield has increased greatly, on the other hand, the phenonemon of dust storm turned out frequently, the soil became degrading, the cost became bigger. It is the revenge of persuiting yield in spite of natural rules.

In view of traditional tillage’s drawbacks, conservation tillage developed as a new technology. It cancelled the operation of mouldboard plow, and sow seeds directly in the field covered with straws, so as to decrease tillage as soon as possible, to maintain soil’s protection function, and to minimize the cost to maintain this status.

In one word, the development of conservation tillage is not only to extend one technology, but also is a revolution in agricultural tillage technology history.
